@Geek Mother, the idea for the "publicly created theme" is to let the readers of this site help make changes to the theme by commenting and list them as contributers.

The other goal is to keep a copy of the theme with each major change so that anyone can have a copy at any particular development point they want.

Ivan, I used to feel the same way as you. however, a plugin is just a piece of code, no different than if you write code and insert it, or wait for an upgrade. In the wrong hands any software can cause problems though.

When running multiple blogs, plugins certainly make the management a lot easier without causing any problems with the SEO. Actually, they helped with consistency.

The code is not that drastically different between the two as some themes get today, and especially with 20 plugins installed.

I am a believer that plugins Kill your WP SEO-wise. Uberdose, and a XMP Sitemap is all a blog needs! :)

Seems like an interesting idea - I have to agree that themes are becoming ever more complicated from the user perspective and the time to get back to simplicty is long overdue.

Some guidance on what you mean by a 'publicly created theme' would be welcome.
