Using Twitter to Follow a Topic
I seem to be using Twitter more these days, and Google Reader less. The trend is easy to understand from a useability standpoint.
Using an RSS reader almost feels like old school technology now. Yes it is still necessary, and it is certainly one of best ways to follow someone, but Twitter is now letting me [...]
RSS for Search
It is interesting that Yahoo and MSN allow RSS subscriptions to a search. By subscribing to a search can save you a lot of time and help facilitate any research that you are doing.
Google only allows subscriptions to a Blog Search, but not a Web Search. A good substitute for this is a Google Alert [...]
Timing Contextual Advertising
Contextual advertising works better with search traffic compared to that of more direct traffic, such as RSS subscribers. Although some may still argue over this, I believe it to be an established fact, at least in my experience.
One thing I realized recently was that most of my search traffic comes from my older posts. However, [...]
Use Google Trends for Your Holiday Menu
Google Trends is one of my favorite pages. Next to reading my RSS subscriptions, Google Trends gives me more ideas than anything else. It is always interesting to see what exact phrases people are using in their searches, and what the hot topics of the day are.
Looking at Trends today made me realize you could [...]
Google AJAX Partner Bar
The Google AJAX Search API team just keeps coming up with some really cool tools. This time it is something called the Partner Bar. The Partner Bar was built based on a request they had to help a customer configure and link to their Partners.
You can read the full post from Mark Lucovsky here.

Wordpress XML Parsing Error
No sooner did I write the post about troubleshooting I came across a Wordpress error that took way more time to solve than I expected.
One thing I know as a programmer is that every single character in a file is critical. I can not even guess how many times a simple question mark or apostrophe [...]
Wordpress Plugin RSS
During my Blog reading this morning I came across a post at Garry Conn dot com about increasing comments using your RSS Feed. This was right after I had watched a video at ShoeMoney.com about “What is your edge?”
The combination of these 2 posts inspired me to write a Wordpress Plugin today to add Comments [...]
Amazon Mashups
Amazon has been doing a great job of staying up to date with RSS. They have released several feeds that give us the opportunity to keep up with Best Sellers, New Releases and Tagged products. Using RSS is a great way to allow users the ability to mashup pages with their content while maintaining an [...]
Dynamic Pages
Based on all the email and comments about dynamic pages I thought I would take this opportunity to do a video on the subject. This video covers the basics of what Dynamic pages are and how I put them together. If you would like more information just drop me a comment.
Beyond your Niche
It is easy to get tunnel vision when working. One thing to remember is there is a lot going on out there beyond your Niche and it is beneficial to be proactive.
Years ago I worked in retail as a district manager. We had stores in malls and I had a simple rule for employees. Park [...]
RSS Autodiscover
As a typical programmer I sometimes look more at the code than I do the content.
With that being said I have noticed a lot of websites that have their RSS Autodiscover tag pointing to a feed that is different from what they advertise as their RSS subscription to readers. Hopefully this video will help identify [...]
Gmail Filters Video
Last week I produced my first video for Garry Conn about Yahoo Pipes. Garry did a great job of posting the video and I really appreciate his help and support.
During this process I discovered how much I enjoyed video production and I have decided to do some more. Here is my next video which was [...]
Social Networking realities
Social Networking is one of the hottest topics on the Internet these days and one that takes a lot of time and thought to really work through. I have tried every possible site that has launched. So far I have yet to find one that I just have to have. To me they are similar [...]
Subscriber Stats and updates to Webmaster Tools
Google has added subscriber stats to their Webmaster Tools. This is a nice addition, however I noticed it was only working with internal feeds and not Feedburner. I left a comment and hopefully this problem can be resolved. The system works with any Google product for aggregating feeds.
The updates to the interface are nice [...]

Whoa: Lamborghini Murcielago LP670-4 SV
Usually when my RSS reader starts beeping and flashing I contemplate why it is that I don’t pour bourbon in my coffee. But, once or twice a day we get an item like this from Jalop’s Wes Siler. Someone on FerrariChat told Captain Siler that they’ve seen the next big bull and knows all the stats. [...]

It looks like URLFan is giving the Google algorithm some trouble. In this screenshot you can URLFan clearly beating out my own domain for my content. It is not okay if your search results are popping up ad-splattered repackaging of people’s RSS feeds. A cursory glance around URLFan shows they’ve made a few changes recently to get them out of hot water. There’s a bunch of links to get your site off their indexes, and they have a scissors icon and the text “Content suppressed by ://URLFAN, for
Subscribe to Local Onliner!
Pardon the self-promotion. But the traffic summaries consistently tell me that more than 3/4 of my readers are “new” to Local Onliner. Why not subscribe? That way you won’t forget to look at all the compelling content I am putting out. Readers have a choice of subscribing in their email via Feedblitz, or via RSS. Either way, push the “subscribe” button on the right hand corner of the home page to get there. Thanks, as always, for your interest!
